On January 26, 1999, the National Health Supervision Agency (ANVISA) was established through Decree 9.782. ANVISA is designated as an autonomous organization operating under a special system. This means that ANVISA is an independent management and financial institution. ANVISA is managed by an academy board consisting of five members.
Within the system of the Federal Public Administration, ANVISA is linked to the Ministry of Health in accordance with the management contract. ANVISA also has other functions: coordination of the National Health Surveillance System (SNVS), national plans for blood and blood products, and national plans for the prevention and control of hospital infections; monitoring of drug prices and medical device prices; control and inspection of tobacco products; national industrial property rights Technical support for patents granted by the Office.
The purpose of ANVISA is to promote the protection of the health of residents through the production and sales of sanitary control products to meet the requirements of sanitary supervision. In addition, ANVISA exercises control of ports, airports and borders, and also liaises with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and foreign institutions, and conducts sanitary supervision of related international matters.
